Heating upgrades for Edinburgh's older homes

Improve comfort and hot-water performance with a practical whole-system scope. Sound pipework and radiators can stay; renewal is proposed only where condition, output, access or circulation justifies it.

Frequently asked questions

Does old heating pipework always need replacing with a new boiler?
No. Age alone is not proof of failure. Sound, correctly sized pipes with acceptable circulation can often stay after cleaning and testing; leaking, badly restricted or unsuitable sections should be specifically identified and renewed.
Can only part of an old heating system be repiped?
Yes. A scoped proposal can retain sound mains while renewing failed branches, radiator tails or inaccessible problem runs. It should explain each retained and replaced section and include access and making-good.
Is the gas pipe the same as the central-heating pipework?
No. The gas supply, sealed heating flow-and-return and potable water services are different systems. A qualified engineer must assess the gas route for the proposed appliance separately.
Why is one room cold when every other radiator is hot?
That room may have higher heat loss, an undersized radiator, a restricted branch or insufficient balanced flow. A room heat-loss check plus radiator and circulation measurements separates those causes.
Will balancing fix cold rooms?
Balancing can correct uneven distribution when the pipework and emitters are capable. It cannot repair a blockage, compensate for a radiator that is too small or overcome excessive building heat loss.
Does pressure loss mean all the old pipes need replacing?
No. Pressure loss needs investigation for visible or concealed leakage, valves, vessels and boiler components. The failed point should be found where possible before proposing partial or full renewal.
Can a combi boiler run two showers at once?
Sometimes, but only if the measured incoming main and selected appliance can support the combined demand at acceptable temperature and pressure. A site test is more useful than bathroom count alone.
Is a cylinder better for a large family?
Often when hot-water use overlaps. The cylinder, recovery rate and distribution must be sized from the household's demand, available space and heat source rather than a generic litres-per-person rule.
Who can install an unvented hot-water cylinder?
It must be installed and commissioned by a person with the appropriate unvented-hot-water competence. Gas work separately requires a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for that work.
When should heating be designed during a renovation?
After the room layout and planned fabric upgrades are known, but before floors, kitchens and decoration are finalised. That gives the design reliable heat-loss inputs and keeps routes accessible.
Can heating work be phased while we live in the property?
Often. A proposal can define live zones, temporary outages, protected access and room-by-room reinstatement. The practical sequence depends on the existing circuit and whether safe isolation is possible.
What should be agreed about floor lifting and reinstatement?
State which floors are lifted, who protects and relays them, what happens to damaged boards or finishes, and whether joinery and decoration are included. Photograph concealed routes before closure.
Can a power flush fix leaking or corroded pipes?
No. Cleaning removes suitable deposits; it does not repair holes, thinning metal or failed joints. Leaking or materially corroded sections need repair or renewal.
When is a power flush unsuitable?
It may be unsuitable or need modification where components are already weak, a blockage is solid, the system cannot be safely isolated or the real problem is poor design. Condition should be assessed first.
What should a heating-upgrade quote include?
Diagnosis, exact scope, retained and replaced parts, cleaning method, controls, balancing, commissioning, access, making-good, waste, exclusions and the partner qualifications required for the work.
Do all radiators need replacing in a full heating upgrade?
No. Retain radiators that are sound, cleanable and able to meet the room heat loss at the design temperature. Replace or resize only where condition or output justifies it.
Does boiler relocation make an upgrade more expensive?
Usually, because it can change gas, heating, water, electrical, flue and condensate routes plus access and making-good. The survey should define those routes before fixing the price.
How does the heating survey and quote work?
Heatscape records the property, system, symptoms, access and project plans; tests what the scope requires; then issues a written proposal separating retained, required and optional work. Any charge is confirmed before booking from the current published service options.
