Clicking with no ignition, or locking out on a fault code straight after? That is an ignition-circuit fault, and part-swapping is the wrong way to fix it. We trace it to the component for a fixed £95.
Boiler won't fire up — Edinburgh diagnostic?
A boiler that will not fire up has failed somewhere in the ignition sequence: gas supply, fan and air-pressure switch, ignition leads and electrodes, the flame-sensing electrode, the gas valve, or the PCB. The fault code on the display narrows it immediately — check our fault-code library, then call and the engineer arrives with the likely part.
Key points
Ignition electrodes worn or sooted up
Gas valve failing to open — often paired with a lockout code
Fan or air-pressure switch fault stopping the sequence before ignition
Flame-sensing electrode not proving the flame, so it lights then dies
Most likely causes
Ignition electrodes worn or sooted up
Gas valve failing to open — often paired with a lockout code
Fan or air-pressure switch fault stopping the sequence before ignition
Flame-sensing electrode not proving the flame, so it lights then dies
Frozen condensate blocking the flue path in winter
Gas meter credit or an isolated emergency control valve
Check these before you call
Confirm other gas appliances work — that rules out supply
Write down the exact fault code and the sequence of lights
Check the condensate pipe outside for ice on cold mornings
Reset once only — repeated resets on a lockout can damage the gas valve
How the visit works
Fixed £95 diagnostic, booked to a two-hour window
Fault traced to the component — no speculative part-swapping
Written quote before any repair begins
Common Worcester, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi and Glow-worm parts on the van
Once. If it locks out again, stop — repeated resets on an ignition lockout can send unburnt gas through the chamber and damage the gas valve. Note the code and book the diagnostic.
Do you fix fault codes on all brands?
Yes — Worcester EA/E9/A01, Vaillant F22/F28/F62/F75, Ideal F1/F2/L2, Baxi E119/E133, Glow-worm F1/F22 and the rest. Our fault-code library explains each one before you book.
How much does a boiler repair cost in Edinburgh?
Heatscape charges a fixed £95 diagnostic across every EH postcode, deducted in full from any repair carried out on the same visit. Out of hours (after 6pm and weekends) is £140. Most common repairs land between £120 and £420 all-in including parts and labour. If a repair would cost more than about £600 on a boiler over 10 years old, we quote a like-for-like replacement at £2,295 instead.
Are boiler repairs guaranteed?
Every repair carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee, and manufacturer part warranties are passed through in full. If the same fault returns inside 12 months there is no second diagnostic fee.
Quoted on Monday, fitted by Friday. Fixed price, no surprises, and the engineer cleaned up better than I did. House is finally warm in the upstairs bedrooms.

Tenement flue routing was a nightmare with the last quote we got. Heatscape actually solved it and dealt with the factor for us. Damp gone too.
