Gas fire and gas cooker fitting in Edinburgh

We arrange gas hob and cooker connection and disconnection, gas fire installation, servicing, removal and capping across Edinburgh. All work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered partner engineer — and you can check their registration on the Gas Safe Register before they start. Fixed price agreed before work begins.

Gas cooker and hob connection

Connecting a gas cooker or hob is not a DIY job — by law anyone working on a gas appliance must be Gas Safe registered, and a bad connection is how slow leaks start. Your engineer connects the appliance with a new bayonet or rigid connection as appropriate, checks the stability chain or bracket, verifies the flame picture on every burner, and tightness-tests the connection before leaving.

Disconnections for a kitchen refit or a new appliance delivery are capped off safely at the isolation valve, so your kitchen fitter can work around the point until the new appliance goes in. If you are switching from gas to induction, the supply is capped and the bayonet removed so nothing live is left behind a cupboard.

Key points

Gas fire installation, servicing and removal

Edinburgh's period flats are full of gas fires — working ones in living-room fireplaces, and plenty of dead ones left behind by previous owners. A live gas fire should be serviced annually like a boiler: the flue or chimney draw is checked, the catchment space is cleared, and the fire is spillage-tested, because a blocked flue in a tenement chimney can push combustion products back into the room.

Removing a gas fire properly means more than lifting it out. The supply is capped at the isolation point — never just at the fire — the hearth and opening are made safe, and the chimney is left ventilated so it does not attract damp. If you are opening up a fireplace for a log stove or a decorative restoration, the gas work is done first and certified before any builder or sweep starts.

Flue and ventilation checks

Every gas appliance needs air. In draught-proofed modern flats and sealed-up period properties, original ventilation is often blocked — a vent covered by a fitted wardrobe is a classic Edinburgh find. Your engineer checks the permanent ventilation for every appliance and the flue route for fires, and tells you in writing if anything needs opened up before the appliance can be used safely.

Frequently asked questions

Can I connect my own gas cooker?
No. Anyone working on a gas appliance must be Gas Safe registered — it is a legal requirement, not a recommendation. A self-connect that leaks voids your home insurance and puts the household at risk. The fixed price for a proper connection starts at £85.
How do I check the engineer is really Gas Safe registered?
Every engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card with a licence number, and you can verify it on the Gas Safe Register website or by phone before any work starts. We encourage you to check — it takes a minute and it is your right.
Do I need my gas fire serviced if I rarely use it?
Yes — an unused fire can have a blocked flue (birds' nests are common in Edinburgh chimneys) and the first cold night you light it is when a spillage problem shows. An annual service with a flue draw and spillage test keeps it safe.
Can you cap the gas so I can fit a log burner?
Yes — the gas supply is capped and certified first, then your stove installer and sweep can work safely. Doing it in that order is essential; never let a builder remove a live gas fire.
